Kolibri Festival Finland
Guest artist Yara Kono
Illustrator and children’s author Yara Kono will attend Kolibrí-Festivaali 1st through 13th October 2018. At the Festival a children’s book illustrated by Yara Kono will be published in Finnish. It will be the second children’s book ever translated from Portuguese into Finnish.
Kolibrí, the Ibero-American Cultural Festival has the pleasure of presenting the work of Brazilian-Portuguese illustrator and children’s author Yara Kono this autumn. Yara Kono is one of the most promising illustrators of Portuguese language children’s literature, and the guest of honour of Kolibrí.
The multicultural and multilingual Kolibrí will be held in Helsinki and Espoo 1.-13.10.2018. In Espoo Kolibrí will take over the Iso Omena library and Galleria Kohtaamo. In Helsinki Kolibrí’s stages will be Malmitalo and the Malmi library.
Yara Kono was born in Brazil in1972. Even though her first carrier was in biochemistry, drawing turned out to be the great passion of her life. Since 2004 she has been working in Planeta Tangerina, the Portuguese Publishing House which in 2013 was elected Europe’s best publisher of children’s literature at the Bologna International Children’s Book Fair.
Her illustrations have received distinctions in many children’s book events. In 2010, she herself was elected Portugal’s best illustrator.
Kolibrí will present Yara Kono’s illustrative art in a retrospective in Galleria Kohtaamo in Espoo. The expo will open on October 1st, the same day as the publication of Kono and Isabel Minhós Martins’ book, ”Sata siementä, jotka lensivät pois” (“One hundred seeds that flew away”). The book has been published in Finnish by Etana Editions.
While in Finland, Yara Kono will run several multilingual workshops on art for children. She will teach students of the Aalto University as well as members of Kuvittajat ry (Finnish Illustrators’ Association). She will also participate in a discussion organized by Etana Editions publishing house on the future of children’s picture books.
For the fourth year now, Cultural Festival Kolibrí proposes arts and fun activities together with friends in Spanish and Portuguese. This autumn, in addition to the illustrator Yara Kono, there will be workshops as well as shows and performances from different fields of art, ranging from music and dance to architecture.
Kolibrí is a way for the whole family to experience our country’s multilingualism and diversity through the eyes of a child. Over 10.000 children and adults have participated in the festival produces by Kulttuurikeskus Ninho association.
